The fruit fly, A.K.A. Vinegar or Pomace Flies, is often brought into a home or business via fresh fruit and vegetables, or merely fly in through a screen or any tiny opening. The adult fly is about an eighth of an inch long including wings with red eyes and tan colored abdomen and thorax. They are attracted mostly to fresh and fermenting fruits and vegetables.
Fruit Fly, common name for two families of true (two-winged) flies, the larvae of which feed on fresh or decaying vegetable matter. True fruit flies, such as the house fly-sized apple maggot, have intricate, often colorful wing patterns by which females recognize males of their species. They are sometimes called peacock flies because of the way they wave and display their wings in courtship. The term fruit fly is also applied to the much smaller vinegar flies.

Fruit Fly - Drosophilidae
The fruit fly is a common pest in homes, restaurants, and other occupied places where food is served. There are many species. However, there is one classified as the common fruit fly.
Fruit Fly Lifecycle
In optimal temperatures of approximately 70-80 degrees, the average natural life span of fruit fly adults is 40 to 50 days. Female fruit flies are capable of mating and laying several batches of eggs (up to 500) in that time, allowing the fruit fly population in a home to multiply quickly. The life span of the fruit fly is influenced by temperature. The fruit fly’s life cycle begins when the female lays her eggs on a piece of decaying, sweet organic material such as fruit. After eggs hatch into small, white larvae, they eat from their nesting site for four days, absorbing the nutrients and energy needed to transform into adults. Larvae then locate to dark, dry places for pupation. In approximately four days, the legless larvae grow six legs and a pair of wings before emerging as adults. During this time, the faint outline of the transforming fly is visible through the pupa case. Following pupation, adult fruit flies are ready to mate in about two days. Eggs - Very small (approximately 1/2mm in length.) Larvai - Very small wormlike. Pupae – Very small, almost not visible. Adult – Yellow-brown, with brick red eyes and transverse black rings across the abdomen.Signs of the Fruit Fly
- Very tiny flying insects hovering near rotting or past ripe fruit
- Near impossible to determine if fruit fly eggs, larvae, or pupa are present

Your technicians were so polite and considerate. They put covers over their boots and wore a mask the entire time. It was a pleasure to have them working in my house.
