4 quick steps for preparing laundry for a bed bug exterminator visit
Once you’ve gotten through the process of denial and found the signs that you have a bed bug infestation, it’s time to get to the next step. It’s easy to get caught up with the idea that having bed bugs in your home makes you a dirty person. People always say, “I keep a clean house, why me?” I’m sure you have thought or are thinking about buying something real quick to spray them with. Most professionals will tell you not to waste your money. I mean there are things around the house you can spray that have the same effect. Quite often its never anything anyone did to create an infestation of bed bugs, but there are things we can do to prepare laundry for bed bugs. Remember whether you’re getting ready to treat or moving to another home or apartment, follow all the protocols for bed bug elimination.
How to handle your laundry when your bed bug exterminator is coming:
Drying Laundry Kills Bed Bugs:
Putting laundry in your dryer for 30 minutes will kill off bed bugs 99% of the time. Dryers can get up to 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Also consider putting items in a black garbage bag in the sun to heat up the items if washing seems like its not an option. This is especially helpful with large items that don’t fit into washers or dryer and you plan on taking them to the laundry mat at a later time. Ex: Comforters, Blankets, Linen Closet.
Don’t Try and Do Too Much:
We always tell folks to make lemonade out of a bed bug infestation. Why not take some time to go thru the items you don’t need or start storing items in sealed plastic garbage bags in areas like the garage or unfinished basements? Sometimes re-infestation can start when your trying to do too much at once. One idea is to sort clothing and bag in an as needed basis. Then you can get all the clothes washed and dried that are needs giving yourself sometime to do the rest.
Don’t Mix Clothing from Closets:
Remember bringing the bags into the closet and start bagging in that area is very important. Do not starting throwing laundry around the house and certainly don’t start mixing and moving bags from one closet or storage area to the next. Sometimes you can cause more issues by transporting bed bugs when your preparing to get rid of them than if you just left it alone.
Do It All – Why Risk A Bed Bug Re-Infestation:
We know it feels like overkill but when your dealing with such a finicky pest that has over 40% chance of re-infestation it seems like the few extra hours are worth it. Wash everything. Why not? Some of it needed to be done anyway and if it only takes one. If your family and pets all over the house, who knows where they ended up.
Remember clearing the clothes out of the dressers and cleaning the closets is the primary prep that must be done. A lot of folks will bag everything up, recruit some clothing folders and take half a day at the laundry mat. Remember bed bug elimination is a combination of a great prep and a great bed bug company. Maybe this time your family will appreciate the laundry getting done!
